João Maria Gusmão (Lisbon, 1979) and Pedro Paiva (Lisbon, 1978) collaborate since 2001 on the creation of objects, installations, 16 and 35mm films, as well as on editorial projects.

The duo has participated in several international biennials: 2006, in the 27th São Paulo Biennial (Brasil);  2007, in the 6th Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre (Brésil); 2008, in the Manifesta 7 (Italy); in 2009, they represented Portugal at the 53rd Veneza Biennial; in 2010 at the 8th Gwangju  Biennial (South Corea) and in 2013 participated in 55th Veneza Biennial central exposition (Italy).

Among their recent individual exhibitions: in 2016, “The Sleeping  Eskimo”, Kunsthaus Aarau, (Swiss); 2014/15, “Papagaio”, at HangarBicocca (Milano), at Camden Arts Centre (London) and at KW Berlin; in 2011, “Alien Theory”, at the Frac Île-de-France, Le Plateau (Paris), “There’s nothing more to tell because this is small, as is every fecundation”, at the Marino Marini Museum (Florence) and “Tem gwef tem gwef dr rr rr” at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf; in 2010, “On the Movement of the Fried Egg and Other Astronomical Bodies”, at Ikon Gallery (Birmingham); in 2008, “Horizonte de Acontecimientos”  PHotoEspaña (Madrid); and the exhibition “Abissologia: para uma ciência transitória do indiscernível”, at the Cordoaria Nacional (Lisbon), with the collaboration of Zé Dos Bois gallery and Lisbon’s town council.

The printed edition of this title was published at 350 copies (including 35 out of sale), numbered from 1 to 350. It presents itself as a single signature, sewed with a Singer machine. It is ornamented on the title page with Jonah Thrown to the Whale, engraving of Hans Sebald Beham (1500-1550), and with a black and white reproduction of Ventriloquism, creation of the authors. The book was composed (in Adobe Caslon, Modula ot, Mrs Eaves, Essonnes, Arno pro, and Im Fell double Pica fonts) at a house along the Tagus, and was printed, with offset digital technique, in the white city at the Gráfica Guide, on Munken Pure 100g paper for the inside, and on Arjowiggins Pop’ Set Sky Blue 240g for the cover, on the 2nd of march two thousand eighteen. This being the title’s first print. The publisher expresses sincere gratitude for their kind participation to:  Natxo Checa, the galeria Zé dos Bois, Nuno Faria, Frédéric Duarte, Ana Leão (Antalis), Xenon Cruz, Catarina Santos, Carlos Godinho and Mariana Ferreira.
The book was launched on the Saturday 3rd of March 2018, 18h, at the Zé Dos Bois art gallery (Rua da Barroca, 59, Lisboa), with an original serigraph by Catarina Santos especially created for the occasion, and printed at 50 ex. (cf. Ismael’s catalogue).
