«Guerra na Guiné (War in Guinea) was written precisely to help clarify. It is neither a novel nor a report. It is an account, as objective as possible, of a struggle in which the Portuguese armed forces have covered themselves in glory. The chronological sequence of this account is deliberately and frequently interrupted by explanations and information, provided with the aim of bringing the reader closer to the reality of the conflict. We have, however, avoided detailed descriptions of the operations or how our soldiers overcome the challenges they face. It seemed to us that such descriptions would be better suited to a different kind of work.»
