In ‘Vivre, vaincre’ or ‘To Live, to conquer’, Claire Fontaine questions the status of the book by revealing the circulation of the discourses that surround it: the back cover, combining commercial signs, hooks and arguments, is a symbol.

The book thus juxtaposes fifty-four cover pages, reproduced as they are, to multiple authors, anonymous and mandatory mentions – ISBN, prizes – underlining their nature as a commercial and renewable object.

The second part of the book sets out the transcription of the information on the fourth – abstracts, bibliographic or biographical notes – in the form of a single text arranged through the intervention of the artist (cut-up, cuts) Such as “a constantly interrupted and violently mutilated history of revolts and resistance”.

This book continues the reflection of Claire Fontaine on the object-book launched in 2006 with, in particular, the realization of the brickbats – bricks enveloped in blanks of covers – which impertinently interrogate the power of language on the bodies and relations between Culture and goods.
